Where to Stay for Gorropu and the Gulf of Orosei

Cala Gonone for the boats, Dorgali for the Gorropu and Tiscali pickups, Orosei or Santa Maria Navarrese at either end: which base fits your days.

Updated October 2026

Stay in Cala Gonone if the sea is the main event: the boats to Cala Luna, the Bue Marino cave and Cala Goloritzé all leave from its harbour, so the walk from your room to the pier is the whole commute. Stay in Dorgali, 6.9 km up the road, if you came for Gorropu and Tiscali: the off-road hiking days, such as Beranu Experience's Gorropu trek, pick up there, and the town is 13.9 km by road from the Sa Barva bridge where the long walk to the gorge starts. Orosei, to the north, and Santa Maria Navarrese, to the south, make sense when your trips leave from them.

Cala Gonone or Dorgali: what the choice really is

The two places belong to the same municipality and sit 6.9 km apart by road, so the decision is less about distance than about which mornings you want to make easy. Cala Gonone is the seaside village below the mountains, built around a small port and a promenade. Dorgali is the inland town above it, a working town with its own shops and bars rather than a seaside resort.

If most of your days are on the water, sleep by the water. If most of them start in a four-wheel-drive heading for the Oddoene valley, sleep in Dorgali, or accept a short drive up the hill each morning. Several of the hiking days collect from both, so Cala Gonone works for a mixed week too.

Cala Gonone: for the boats

Every Cala Gonone boat trip starts at the port: the dinghy days down the coast, the Grotta del Bue Marino boat (Nuovo Consorzio Trasporti Marittimi), about 20 to 30 minutes each way, and the Cala Luna boats, about 30 minutes. The 2026 season sheet of the boat consortium ran from 27 March to 31 October 2026, with the full summer timetable from June to September. For the departures, prices and which boat suits whom, see the Cala Gonone boat trip guide; the cave has its own ticket guide.

The other reason to stay here is parking. The 2026 listing for the Agostino Charter dinghy trip sets it out: in April, May, September and October there are all-day parking spaces in the village for €6; every summer, from 1 June to 15 September, there is free parking at the entrance to the town, with a small train or shuttle bus down to the port. Staying in the village takes the car out of the morning altogether.

Cala Gonone also works for a hiking day. Escursì’s Gorropu hike from Cala Gonone (Escursì) starts in the village and drives you to the trailhead by 4x4, and Beranu Experience’s Tiscali hike (Beranu Experience) picks up in Dorgali or Cala Gonone. The trade-off: the village lives by the boat season, so outside it expect fewer places open and quiet evenings.

Dorgali: for Gorropu and Tiscali

Dorgali is where the inland days begin. Beranu Experience’s Gorropu trek with off-road transfer and lunch (Beranu Experience) and Escursì’s guided Gorropu trek from Dorgali (Escursì) both drive out of town across the Oddoene valley to the trailhead. If you go on your own, the Sa Barva bridge is 13.9 km from Dorgali by road, the last stretch on a track, and the walk from there to the gorge entrance is 5.6 km measured along the trail. The other way in, from the Genna Silana pass on the SS125, is 20.3 km from Dorgali by road. The Gorropu Canyon map shows both trailheads, and the hike comparison sets the guided days side by side.

Tiscali, the nuragic village inside a collapsed limestone sinkhole, is also a Dorgali day; the Tiscali hike guide covers the walk. Stay here if you want a working town rather than a resort, and do not mind driving down to the port for a boat day.

Orosei: north, with pickups for the gorge

Orosei sits to the north, on the plain where the gulf’s mountains give way to long beaches. Two of the guided Gorropu days collect there: Jebel Sardinia’s Gorropu Canyon guided hike (Jebel Sardinia) and Orosei AdvenTours’ trek to Gorropu with panoramic views (Orosei AdvenTours), both picking up in Orosei or Dorgali. For the sea, the Gulf of Orosei cruise from La Caletta or Orosei (Nuovo Consorzio Trasporti Marittimi) saves you the drive south to Cala Gonone. Choose Orosei if you want the long sandy beaches of the northern gulf close by and are happy to be collected for the gorge.

Santa Maria Navarrese: south, for Goloritzé

Santa Maria Navarrese is the small resort near Baunei at the southern end of the gulf. The south-side boats leave from here: east coast sardinia excursion’s guided cruise to Cala Goloritzé and Cala Mariolu (east coast sardinia excursion srl) also boards at Arbatax and Lotzorai, while the Goloritzé, Mariolu and Biriala cruise (Sardinia Natural Park Tours) and the Goloritzé and Mariolu boat tour (Tortuga Beach) start in Santa Maria Navarrese. It is also the closest coastal base for the walk down to Cala Goloritzé from Su Porteddu, on the Golgo plateau above Baunei; the Cala Goloritzé hike guide has the booking rules. Gorropu is a long drive from here, so pick it for a Goloritzé-first trip.

The end of the 2026 season, and spring 2027

The season is closing. The consortium’s 2026 boat sheet ends on 31 October 2026, and its service runs every day from Easter to All Saints (1 November), so in 2027 the Cala Gonone boats return from Easter, 28 March 2027. On 26 October 2026 the Agostino Charter dinghy still showed departures from 27 October 2026, and the Beranu Experience Gorropu trek from 28 October 2026. The gorge itself can be visited from mid-March to mid-November. Some operators have already moved to spring: Jebel Sardinia’s first open date is 22 May 2027, Orosei AdvenTours’ is 3 April 2027, and the Nuovo Consorzio dinghy cruise (Nuovo Consorzio Trasporti Marittimi) returns on 15 April 2027. For an off-season stay, Dorgali is a year-round town, not a seaside resort.

How these facts were checked

Road and trail distances were measured along the road and the trail on our own maps. The boat season and crossing times come from the 2026 season sheet and tariff of the Nuovo Consorzio Trasporti Marittimi in Cala Gonone; the gorge season from the Gorropu concessionaire, Chintula s.n.c. Parking in Cala Gonone, pickup towns and first open dates come from the GetYourGuide listings, read on 26 October 2026. Prices, departures and parking rules change by season, so check them for your dates.
