The Guide

Tiscali: The Village, the Walk and the Ticket

What is up there, how hard the path is, what you pay at the top, when it is open, and whether to go with a guide.

Tiscali is the ruin of a Nuragic village built inside a huge collapsed sinkhole near the top of Monte Tiscali, in the Supramonte between Oliena and Dorgali. You reach it on a steep, rough path of about an hour and a half from the Lanaittu valley, and pay €5 (adults) at the site. The guided way is Beranu Experience’s Tiscali Nuragic Village Guided Hike with Lunch: pickup in Dorgali or Cala Gonone, the off-road drive through the valley, the entry ticket and a picnic lunch, from €75 a person (checked October 2026). It is rated 5.0 from 5 reviews; when we checked on 26 October 2026 its next open date was 28 October 2026.

Tiscali sits above the Lanaittu valley between Oliena and Dorgali, a few kilometres north of Gorropu Canyon. The dashed line is the last stretch of the path to the village.

What is up there

From the valley you see nothing: the village is hidden inside the sinkhole, a great hollow where the roof of a limestone cave collapsed long ago, open to the sky and grown over with Mediterranean scrub. Inside are the stone footings of the huts of a late Nuragic settlement, the people who built Sardinia’s stone towers. It is believed to have been one of their last refuges against the Roman advance, which would explain why anyone would build in a place this hard to reach.

The Region of Sardinia’s culture portal gives the archaeological museum of Dorgali as the contact for the site and lists entry at €5 for adults and €2.50 reduced (ages 6 to 13, over-70s and school groups), free for under-6s, open every day from 9:00 to 19:00 from May to September and 9:00 to 17:00 from October to April. It advises calling ahead, because access can change with the weather.

How hard is the Tiscali hike?

Steep and rough, but short: about an hour and a half up from the Lanaittu valley on an old charcoal burners’ path, and the same down. The path climbs the limestone flank of Monte Tiscali over rough, stony ground. Wear proper hiking shoes and carry water. Beranu Experience’s listing rules out children under 8 and anyone afraid of heights, which tells you the kind of ground it is.

Getting to the start is the other half of the problem. The trailhead is in the Lanaittu valley past the Sa Oche cave, at the end of a rough dirt road that leaves the provincial road east of Oliena. That road is the reason the guided day uses an off-road vehicle.

Guided or on your own?

On your own, you drive the valley track, walk up, pay €5 at the site and come down: a half-day for fit walkers with a suitable car. With Beranu Experience’s guided hike, the drive, the ticket and the route finding are taken care of, a guide explains the site, and lunch is waiting at the vehicles. For a first visit, and for anyone staying in Dorgali or Cala Gonone without a car they want on that track, the guided day is the easier choice.

Check dates for the Tiscali hike

Tiscali or Gorropu?

They are a few kilometres apart and both are big days on foot, so pick one, or do one each day. Gorropu is the bigger landscape: a gorge with walls about 500 m high, a longer walk and a €6 ticket at the entrance; see the Gorropu Canyon hike page. Tiscali is the shorter, steeper walk with an archaeological site at the end. Beranu Experience runs both, the off-road Gorropu trek with lunch and this Tiscali day, with the same pickup in Dorgali.

When to go

The site is open all year (shorter hours from October to April), but the walk is far better outside the summer heat: April to June, September and October. When we checked on 26 October 2026, Beranu Experience still had a Tiscali date on 28 October 2026. In winter, check the weather and call the site before you set out.

How these facts were checked

Written 26 October 2026. The entry prices, the reduced and free categories, the opening hours and the advice to call ahead are from the Region of Sardinia’s culture portal, sardegnacultura.it (page updated 27 January 2026); the walking time and the Lanaittu valley approach are from the Region’s tourism site, Sardegna Turismo. The guided hike’s price, rating, review count, pickups, inclusions, group size, age limit and next date are from its GetYourGuide listing, checked 25 and 26 October 2026. Prices and opening times change with the season, so check before you plan around a figure.
