How a Guided Gorropu Hike Works

Meet in Cala Gonone, drive to the trail, walk in, eat, walk out. About six hours.

  1. Meet in Cala Gonone

The hike runs in groups of up to 8 and is confirmed once at least 4 people have booked, so book early and keep your plans flexible. The guide speaks Italian, English or French.

  2. 4x4 to the Trailhead

An off-road vehicle takes you to the start of the trekking trail on the Dorgali side. The entry ticket for the gorge is included, so there is no cash to find at the ticket office.

  3. Walk the River Bed into the Gorge

The path to the canyon is a beaten trail through Mediterranean scrub. Inside the gorge you walk on rock and scree among white limestone boulders, and the guide sets the turning point.

  4. Lunch in Front of the Walls

Lunch is cold cuts and cheese with carasau and moddizzosu bread, vegetables, fruit, a dessert, water and wine; ask ahead for gluten-free or vegetarian. Then the walk out and the drive back.

The Comparison

Which Gorropu Hike, From Where, and When

The five guided days side by side, the routes they use, what each includes, and the dates they run.

Every guided Gorropu hike on sale works the same way: an off-road vehicle takes a group of up to 8 down to the trail on the Dorgali side, a guide walks you along the Flumineddu into the gorge, and you turn round where the boulders begin. What differs is where you are picked up, whether lunch and the €6 ticket are included, and when the operator runs it. From Cala Gonone, Escursì’s Gorropu hiking with lunch includes both, costs from €83.50 (checked October 2026) and had its next open date on 5 November 2026.

Which route do the guided hikes take?

All five go in from the Dorgali side: the off-road vehicles cross the Oddoene valley to the river, and the walk follows the Flumineddu and the cliffs of Monte Oddeu to the mouth of the gorge. Jebel Sardinia’s and Orosei AdvenTours’ days start the walk by fording the river, so expect wet feet when there is water in it. This is the gentler way in, and the reason the guided days do not climb back up to the SS125.

The other way, the Genna Silana trail, drops about 4.3 km from the pass to the gorge and climbs back the same way, about an hour down and two up. None of the guided days on sale uses it; it is the route for people walking on their own from a car at the pass. The map and trailheads guide shows both.

Guided or on your own?

You do not need a guide to walk to the gorge: the concessionaire at the entrance offers visits with or without one. A guided day earns its price in three ways. It removes the drive on the unpaved track to the Dorgali-side trail, which is where most people’s hire-car worries start. It puts someone in front who knows where the walk ends and the scramble begins, deeper in among the boulders. And three of the five feed you lunch. On your own, budget €6 at the entrance and a long climb if you start at Genna Silana. The difficulty guide covers fitness, children and kit.

Which one to book

  • Staying in Cala Gonone? Book the Escursì hike at the top of this page: the ticket and lunch are included, and you are picked up on the coast. It needs at least 4 bookings to run.
  • Staying in Dorgali? Beranu Experience’s off-road trek with lunch is the default: 4.9 from 56 reviews, six hours, up to 8 people. Bring €6 for the ticket, which is not on its list of inclusions.
  • Staying in Orosei, or travelling in spring 2027? Jebel Sardinia’s guided hike is the cheapest at €57, rated 4.9 from 69 reviews, with English, French and Italian guides; its first open date is 22 May 2027.
  • Want a longer day and more languages? Orosei AdvenTours’ eight-hour trek runs guides in five languages, including German and Spanish, and carries on among the boulders until you need your hands. Its first 2027 date is 3 April 2027.

After the hike

Gorropu fills a day; the sea fills the next one. The coast south of Cala Gonone, with Cala Goloritzé and Cala Mariolu and Cala Luna, is only reachable by boat or on long trails, and the boats leave from the same harbour the Cala Gonone hike starts from. If you want a second inland walk, the Tiscali hike to the Nuragic village in the sinkhole is in the valley next door.
