How Hard Is the Gorropu Canyon Hike?

Gorropu Canyon difficulty by stretch: the walk in, the 2-hour climb back to Genna Silana, the boulder scramble, who should skip it, kit, and guided or not.

Updated October 2026

Gorropu Canyon is a hike, not a climb. The path to the gorge is beaten and has no difficult passages, and inside the gorge you walk on rock and scree. The two hard parts are the climb back up to the Genna Silana pass, about two hours, and the boulder field deeper in the gorge, where you need your hands. With moderate fitness and proper hiking shoes, the first stretch of the gorge is within reach. A guided day from Dorgali drives you to a trailhead on the Dorgali side, which spares you the climb to the pass, and puts a guide beside you at the boulders.

How hard is each part of the hike?

The walk to the gorge. The path to the canyon is beaten and has no technical passages. From the Sa Barva bridge on the Dorgali side, it follows the Flumineddu for 5.6 km, about two hours on foot. The guided hikes on this side start by crossing the river on foot, and Orosei AdvenTours’ trek begins with some wading. From the Genna Silana pass on the SS125, the trail drops 4.3 km to the gorge in about an hour. The descent is steep. The Gorropu Canyon map shows both routes.

The first stretch inside. Past the ticket office at the gorge entrance, you walk on rock and scree between walls about 500 m high. This first stretch is walkable, and if you have managed the path in, you can manage it.

The boulder field. Deeper in, the bed fills with huge boulders. The path gets harder and harder, and you may have to use your hands to get through. On Orosei AdvenTours’ trek, the group turns back when it can go no further. This section is for experienced scramblers or for going with a guide. Treks deep into the gorge call for expert guides and suitable equipment. The concessionaire offers visits at three levels (easy, panoramic and expert), with or without a guide, but does not publish the point where a guide becomes necessary, so ask at the ticket office before you go past the first stretch.

The climb back to Genna Silana. About two hours up a steep trail, at the end of the day. This is the hardest part of the self-guided route from the SS125, and it is the reason to leave time and water for the return.

E is the Italian grade for a hiking path with no technical difficulty, the kind of trail that suits walkers used to uneven ground. The two Escursì sheets describe different days: the Cala Gonone hike covers 12 km on foot, and the Dorgali trek 2.8 km, with a similar height difference.

How long does it take to hike Gorropu Canyon?

On your own, allow at least half a day. From Genna Silana it is about an hour down and two hours back up, plus your time in the gorge. From the Sa Barva bridge it is about two hours each way, plus your time inside. The gorge opens for entry at 10:00, and last entry is mid-afternoon (15:30 or 16:30 depending on the posted season), so start early. The Gorropu Canyon tickets guide has the hours in full.

On a guided day, the whole outing runs six hours on Beranu Experience’s Gorropu trek with off-road transfer and lunch, on Escursì’s Cala Gonone hike and on its Dorgali trek, and eight hours on Orosei AdvenTours’ trek with panoramic views. Those times include the off-road transfers and, where it is included, lunch. Beranu Experience’s day breaks down as about 40 minutes by jeep, about four hours guided, and an hour for lunch.

How deep is Gorropu Canyon?

The walls of Gorropu rise about 500 m, which makes it one of the deepest gorges in Europe. The gorge is about 1.5 km long and narrows to 4 to 5 m at its tightest. The rio Flumineddu cut it through limestone laid down when this part of Sardinia lay under the sea, and the guides point out marine fossils in the rock. Between the walls, the bed is white limestone boulders polished by water, with small pools and streams in places.

Who should not do it

The guided listings name the people the hike does not suit. Read them as a fair guide for going on your own too.

What to bring

Hiking shoes come first: the gorge floor is rock and scree, and the path in is rough. Then water, a sun hat and sunscreen. Add a daypack and rain gear, which Orosei AdvenTours asks for, and a windbreaker, which is on Escursì’s list. Bring a packed lunch on Jebel Sardinia's hike and on any self-guided day. And carry €6 in cash for the ticket unless your hike includes it.

Guided or self-guided?

Self-guided works if you have a car, steady legs and the discipline to turn round at the boulders. You pay €6 at the gorge, walk the first stretch, and climb out at your own pace. Guided suits you if you would rather not drive the track to the Sa Barva bridge, want someone to read the boulder field, or want lunch and the transfer sorted. Escursì’s Gorropu hiking with lunch from Cala Gonone also includes the gorge ticket, from €83.50 (checked October 2026). Beranu Experience’s Dorgali trek, from €75 (checked October 2026), is rated 4.9 from 56 reviews. The guided hikes compared page sets them side by side.

On 26 October 2026, the Beranu Experience trek showed an open date on 28 October 2026. The gorge season runs from mid-March to mid-November, and the first 2027 guided dates listed on 26 October 2026 start from 3 April 2027.

How these facts were checked

The depth, length and width of the gorge, the season, the ticket and the levels of visit come from the concessionaire’s site, gorropu.info, and from Sardinia’s regional tourism site, sardegnaturismo.it, both read on 26 October 2026. The walking times for Genna Silana and the Sa Barva bridge come from sardegnaturismo.it, and the distances were measured along the trail on our own maps. The technical sheets, the not-suitable lists, the kit lists, the prices and the first open dates come from the GetYourGuide listings, read on 26 October 2026. Prices and departures change by season.
